Green screen

A green screen is a display filled edge to edge with green. On a monitor it is used to test green subpixels and find pixel faults. In video work, a green screen is a green backdrop that editing software replaces with another image, a technique called chroma keying.

What green is

The color human vision is most sensitive to, which is why displays and video codecs give it more of their budget than red and blue combined. Green carries most of what your eye reads as brightness.

Two different green screens

Search for a green screen and you find two unrelated things. This page is a display filled with flat green, a testing tool and a light source. The other is the film technique, and a monitor only serves that at very small scale.

How it reads

Green means go, safety, nature and money depending on where you are standing. It is the calmest of the primaries to look at for any length of time, and the least flattering to point at a person, because it drains warmth out of skin.

On a display

Green is the most revealing primary to test with. Because your eye resolves it best, a subtle problem in the green channel is more visible than the same problem elsewhere, so a flat green field is a good check for banding, uniformity and panel mura.

Chroma key, honestly

Green became the standard because it sits furthest from human skin and because sensors record more green detail. A monitor works as a backdrop for a hand, a prop or a miniature. For a person it does not. The screen is too small, it emits rather than reflects, and green spills onto hair and shoulders.

What to use instead

Green fabric or card and two evenly placed lights will outperform any monitor for very little money. The biggest factor in a clean key is never the shade of green. It is lighting the backdrop evenly and keeping your subject far enough in front of it to avoid shadows.

Common questions

Can I use my monitor as a green screen for video calls?
For a small object or a prop held in front of it, yes. For a person, almost certainly not. A monitor is far too small to fill the frame behind you and it emits light rather than reflecting it, which causes green spill onto skin and hair. A cheap fabric backdrop will beat any screen.
What green do real green screens use?
Broadcast chroma key green is a highly saturated yellow-green, chosen because it is the color furthest from human skin tones and because camera sensors capture more detail in the green channel than red or blue. The exact shade matters much less than lighting it evenly.
Why is my green screen test showing colored dots?
Those are pixels with a failed green subpixel. They stay dark or shift color while the rest of the field is uniform green. It is a genuine panel fault, not a browser issue.
Why does green look brighter than red or blue?
Human vision peaks in the green part of the spectrum. At identical signal levels green appears substantially brighter, which is also why display engineers weight green most heavily when calculating perceived brightness.
