Use your screen as a key light for video calls

A phone, tablet or spare monitor filled with warm white makes a soft, flattering key light for video calls, because the panel is large relative to your face. Large sources make soft light. Place it just above eye level and slightly off to one side, run it dimmer than maximum, and keep it out of frame.

The short version

  1. Fill a spare screen with warm white. Warm white flatters skin where pure white reads clinical. A tablet or second monitor works best; a phone works in a pinch.
  2. Place it high and slightly off axis. Just above eye level, a little to one side of the camera, close enough to matter: within arm's reach. Light falls off fast with distance.
  3. Set brightness below maximum. Bright enough to lift your face, dim enough that you are not squinting. If your eyes feel it, the camera shows it.
  4. Check yourself on camera, not in the mirror. Cameras and eyes disagree about light. Judge the result in the call preview and adjust angle before brightness.

The fastest-growing reason people fill a screen with a color has nothing to do with testing panels. It is light. A display is a diffused panel light that you already own, and for the specific job of lighting a face on a video call, it is quietly better than most of the small LED lights sold for the purpose.

Why it works: big beats bright

Soft light is not a property of the bulb; it is a property of size. A source that is large relative to the subject sends light from many angles at once, so every shadow it casts is partly filled by light arriving from another part of the source. That is the whole trick of the photographer's softbox: take a hard bulb, spread it across a big diffusion panel.

A screen skips the middle step. It already is the big diffusion panel. A tablet or monitor at arm's length from your face is a huge source in photographic terms, which is why its light wraps gently instead of carving the hard nose-and-brow shadows a bare desk lamp makes. The panel's actual brightness is modest, and for this job that is a feature.

The setup

Fill a spare screen with warm white. Warm matters: webcams already lean cold, and pure white light pushes skin toward the clinical. The warm white and candle presets on the fullscreen tool are tuned for this.

Position beats power. Put the light just above your eye level and slightly to one side of the camera, the geometry that portrait lighting has settled on for a reason: it models the face without flattening it and keeps glasses glare off axis. Distance matters more than it seems, because light falls off sharply with it. Within arm's reach is working range; across the room is decoration.

Then turn it down. Maximum brightness makes you squint, and squinting reads on camera worse than dim lighting does. The right level lifts your face above the room without becoming a presence your eyes track. Judge it in the call's self-view, not by feel; cameras and eyes disagree about light, and the camera is the one your colleagues are watching.

Where it fits, and where it does not

As a fill against a bright window, as the main light in a dim room, as the rescue for the overhead-light-only home office: a screen does all of this well. What it will not do is light a room, or compete with sunlight behind you. A backlit silhouette needs the window managed, not more panel. And if the call matters enough to light properly every day, the screen is also the cheapest way to learn what position works before buying a dedicated light to put there.

Why does a screen work as a light at all?
Softness is geometry. A source that is large relative to the subject wraps light around it and fills its own shadows, which is why photographers shoot through big diffusers. A panel a foot from your face is enormous in those terms, so its light is soft in a way no bare bulb can be.
What color should the screen be for a video call?
Warm white. Skin under pure white or cool white drifts pale and clinical on camera, and most webcams lean cold already. The warm white and candle presets on the fullscreen tool exist for exactly this job.
Is the screen light bad for my eyes on long calls?
Run it below maximum and slightly off your line of sight and it is just a lamp. The discomfort people report from screen lighting is usually a maximum-brightness panel aimed straight at their own eyes from close range, which no light source enjoys.
